About Me
Erica D. Engelstein, MD, FACC, FHRS is one of the most experienced electrophysiologists in the Chicago region and with over 25 years of clinical, research and teaching experience in a variety of settings including prestigious academic centers, community hospitals and private practice. Her philosophy is to combine experience and the state-of-the-art technology available at Rush to offer the optimal care for each patient, delivered with compassion. Engelstein has been named top doctor in Chicago by Castle Connoly and Chicago Magazine since 2019.
Engelstein’s interests include evaluation and treatment of patients with suspected or documented arrhythmias, including catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia. Engelstein implants cardiac pacemaker, defibrillators and arrhythmia monitoring devices and provides comprehensive and expert follow-up for those patients. Further areas of interest are risk stratification for sudden death and non-pharmacologic stroke prevention with left atrial appendage occlusion devices. Her goal is to make these treatments available to all patients both at Rush University Medical Center and at Rush affiliated hospitals near Chicago.
Engelstein graduated from University of Vienna Medical School and trained in Cardiology and Electrophysiology at University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf (Germany) and New York Hospital – Cornell Medical Center (New York, NY). She continued her clinical and academic career on the faculty of Indiana University Krannert Institute of Cardiology and Northwestern Memorial Hospital where she published extensively on topics such as sudden cardiac death and mechanisms of arrhythmias. For the past 17 years she was the Director of Electrophysiology at Resurrection Medical Center in Chicago, where she established a system wide electrophysiology service line across several community hospitals. She is excited to return to a prestigious academic institution where she will be able to offer a full range of electrophysiology services using the latest technologies in collaboration with an outstanding team.
