About Me

Not all conditions need surgery, and there are plenty of nonoperative things that we do that help patients, especially with arthritic conditions and other aches and pains, but even sometimes with growths -- growths that clearly are benign, meaning not a cancer.

Alan Blank, MD, specializes in malignant and benign musculoskeletal growths and performing limb-salvage surgery in adults as well as children. He also treats a number of general orthopedic conditions and performs joint replacement surgery.

Blank is originally from Connecticut and attended the University of Pennsylvania for his undergraduate degree, earning a BA in English Literature. While there he was a member of the division 1 men's crew team.

He then attended the Chicago Medical School, serving as class president, and earned both his doctor of medicine degree and  master's degree in biomedical sciences and research. After medical school, Blank completed his Orthopaedic Surgery residency in New York City at NYU-Hospital for Joint Diseases. He received the Resident Research Award for his work on prophylactic surgical treatment for metastatic bone disease.

Blank then went on to complete a year of training in adult and pediatric musculoskeletal oncology and sarcoma surgery at Huntsman Cancer Institute and Hospital in Salt Lake City.

He has an interest in treating benign and malignant primary growths of the musculoskeletal system, as well as metastatic bone disease. Blank has published many peer reviewed scientific articles in the field of orthopedic oncology, co-authored a number of textbook chapters, and presented at many internationally attended academic conferences. He also treats a comprehensive set of non-tumor related conditions such as joint reconstruction, fractures and other general orthopedics.

He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), the Connective Tissue Oncologic Tumor Society (CTOS) and the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS).

A Patient at Rush - Jul 2024
So grateful for Dr. Blank! Came here last year on recommendation of multiple knowledgeable medical sources for a 2nd opinion on what these "unusual lesions" were on my X-rays/MRI's/bone scans. He carefully reviewed my history & prior diagnostic/lab/X-ray data, and I had a thorough physical & functional exam. He patiently answered all of my questions and concerns while intently listening and giving reassurance. He then presented several options for a course of action.

Dr. Blank has been such a blessing to me - not only does he have incredible expertise with bone issues but he has an absolutely awesome bedside manner! In my case, he and his staff have helped me to fully understand and navigate my complex bone condition when no one else (including multiple well-respected orthopedist doctors in the area) could not, as they had not seen "anything like this before". Something you never want to hear! Thankfully since Dr. Blank has seen so many complex bone cases - he was very familiar with my suspected (high-probability of nonmalignant) bone condition and not only thoroughly explained it, but discussed options with me on how to address it, potential future implications & how he could address rare complications in the future if they should occur. He presented my xrays/case to Rush's multidisciplinary tumor review board which Is such a benefit to get other expert opinions & consensus. This was a follow-up visit where he reviewed xrays to see if any significant change - thankfully stable. Just so relieved that there is someone like Dr. Blank In the Chicagoland area!!
